UC Davis medical student Lenton Joby Morrow-Mazur is one of 17 medical students named by
National Medical Fellowships as a Community Service Scholar. Morrow-Mazur receives $15,000 that he will
use to assess physician knowledge and attitudes about buprenorphine, a powerful pain-relieving drug that
at low doses helps to wean drug addicts from heroin, morphine and other opiates with fewer withdrawal
"Intravenous drug users are one of California's most medically underserved populations," said Morrow-Mazur.
"I am conducting this research project so that one day medical treatment of opiate dependence may be more
physician-directed and office-based and will become a more dignifying process for these patients."
Morrow-Mazur is a third-year medical student who has a long-standing interest in substance abuse issues.
