Mary Gonzalez-Howard, a student at the UC Davis School of Medicine, has been selected as a 2002 Community Service Scholar by the National Medical Fellowships.
The Community Service Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students who are interested in receiving first-hand exposure to community-based primary care medicine or conducting research in areas of critical need, such as HIV/AIDS care, hypertension, tuberculosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and asthma.
All scholarship winners must commit the equivalent of six weeks during each academic year, or in the summers, to work with selected community-based health-care agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Gonzalez-Howard, in her third year at the UC Davis medical school, is receiving $7,500 from the scholarship program. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of personal commitment to practice in California, demonstrated interest in community-based primary care research, satisfactory academic performance and leadership.
