Reducing potential nerve damage

A UC Davis team, headed by Allen Chen, assistant professor of radiation oncology, is leading the effort to establish new treatment guidelines for physicians in performing radiation treatments without injuring patients' brachial plexus nerves, which begin at the back of the neck and extend behind the clavicle and down to the hand. Chen and his colleagues devised step-by-step techniques for identifying the brachial plexus complex and then designed delivery contours for intensity-modulated radiation therapy treatments to avoid those areas. Results of the study were published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physiology.
