More than 30 children with asthma attended a special summer camp sponsored by the UC Davis Asthma
Network (UCAN), where they took part in the traditional fun activities of camp while learning how to control
The 2004 Kids in Camp Asthma Camp, the first ever held by UCAN, was held at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola,
Calif. The 33 children who attended the camp are from medically underserved areas of Sacramento. A $5,000
contribution by Carol Robinson, senior associate director for UC Davis Health System's Patient Care Services,
paid for the children's attendance.
Along with the usual outdoor activities of any summer camp, such as gold panning, rope climbing, swimming
and archery, the campers also learned about spirometry and took part in workshops to learn important tips
about controlling asthma. Learning about asthma medications and written asthma action plans were turned
into fun activities.
