Thomas Stevenson named president of Plastic Surgery
Educational Foundation
Thomas Stevenson, chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery and professor of surgery at the UC
Davis School of Medicine, recently was named president of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF),
the research and educational arm of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Stevenson is also director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), vice chairman of the ABPS,
a director of the American Board of Surgery, and president-elect of the Association of Academic Chairmen
of Plastic Surgery (AACPS).
Charles Halsted named to American Association for
the Advancement of Science
Charles H. Halsted, professor emeritus of internal medicine and director of the Clinical Nutrition
Research Unit, has been elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Halsted was elected on the basis of his fundamental studies in folate metabolism, including discovery
and characterization of intestinal folate hydrolase and the role of folate deficiency in pathogenesis
of alcoholic liver disease.
Halsted has been a member of the Department of Internal Medicine since 1974 and a member of the Department
of Nutrition since 1990. He obtained his medical education and postgraduate training at the University
of Rochester, Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has written more
than 150 scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters on the regulation of intestinal folate absorption
and metabolism and on the role of nutritional factors in the pathogenesis and clinical expression of alcoholic liver disease.
Ishwarlal (Kenny) Jialal, professor of internal medicine, received the Certificate of Honor Award
from the New Jersey section of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.
This award recognizes individuals for raising the level of clinical chemistry, encouraging the professional
advancement of clinical chemists, and promoting professional goals and education. Jialal is the Robert
E. Stowell Endowed Chair in Experimental Pathology and director of the Atherosclerosis and Metabolic Research Laboratory.
