CT scan usage in pediatric minor head trauma studied
Nathan Kuppermann, UC Davis associate professor of emergency medicine, has been awarded a $1.6
million grant to develop criteria for determining when computed tomography (CT) should be used on children
with minor head trauma.
The study aims to identify highand low-risk indicators
for brain injury in children with head trauma to reduce the number of CT scans and their associated
drawbacks conducted on children at low risk of brain injury.
The grant was awarded by the Maternal and Child Health
Bureau and will be conducted within the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), the
first federally funded pediatric emergency medicine research network. PECARN consists of 25 emergency
departments around nation and conducts high-priority, multi-institutional research into the prevention
and management of acute illnesses and injuries in children and youth of all ages.
