UC Davis possesses an extraordinary dedication to building strong communities and solving real-world problems. Our first century, in fact, was built on that premise, and our next will surely continue to fulfill that promise.
I proudly look to the many accomplishments of UC Davis Health System as one of the foremost ways our institution makes a difference in people's lives. Not only does the health system reach out to underserved populations through its student-run clinics and its use of telemedicine to deliver care, it also has put together a remarkable team of scientists who are conducting stem-cell research that promises new ways to treat and prevent some of the most persistent and perplexing diseases.
We continue to anticipate the needs of the communities we serve by planning and establishing new schools – specifically, the proposed Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and a School of Public Health. Both of these efforts will generate a workforce ready for the health-care challenges of the 21st century.
This forward-thinking, pragmatic approach goes back to our roots as a land-grant institution when, in 1908, UC Davis first brought research and teaching to the California public and, at the same time, offered sensible opportunities for these young farmers to prepare for a modern world.
From the beginning, we consistently looked for ways to improve social and economic conditions and environmental health. This interdisciplinary approach has survived – and thrived – as one of the university's founding values for past, present and now, more than ever, our future.
Today, UC Davis is leveraging its worldclass programs in environmental science, engineering, management, the arts, law, viticulture and enology, life science and more into a future that promotes rigorous learning while serving the public.
Because we are so proud of the impact UC Davis has made and continues to make, we are celebrating our past, present and future throughout the school year. Please join us at one or more the many events we are holding to celebrate UC Davis' first century of truly exceptional achievement and service. With your help, our second century is sure to be even more remarkable than our first!
