Gene variations impact cancer treatments

"" UC Davis is helping to develop a compact proton therapy system.

A UC Davis study led by oncologist David Gandara has found that gene variations between Japanese and U.S. clinical trial participants help explain why a common lung cancer drug therapy is more toxic but more successful in one group over the other. The study breaks new ground by exploring the possible role of ethnic patterns in the emerging science of pharmacogenomics, which promises to tailor drug regimens to a patient's genetic profile, not simply ethnicity. In the study, the Japanese participants fared better but needed smaller doses because of increased toxicity. Gandara said the differences corresponded with the participants' genetic makeup, rather than their ethnicity per se, because some individuals in each group possessed genetic variations not typical of their group.
