The Humanitarian Award, established in 1990 was created to give recognition annually to an Alumna/us of the UC Davis School of Medicine or the UC Davis Medical Center for outstanding contributions to their community through distinguished public service. John Chuck, M.D., is a family physician with the Permanente Medical Group and Clinical Professor at the UC Davis School of Medicine. As the founder and CEO of Serotonin Surge Charities, Dr. Chuck has been the driving force behind fundraising efforts that have provided support for community charities and, in particular, $180,000 in support of the UC Davis School of Medicine Student-run Clinics and Predoctoral Training Programs. Serotonin Surge Charities also supports breast cancer and student scholarship programs in the community. Dr. Chuck has done all of this on a voluntary basis with nearly 100 percent of the money raised being awarded to UC and community programs. He is one who leads by example, and his energy, sense of humor and enthusiasm are contagious. Dr. Chuck is a 1989 alumnus of UC Davis Medical Center's family practice residency program, and he has been a popular preceptor at the School of Medicine continuously since 1990. His dedication to improving patient care and providing for underserved is apparent in his daily life as a physician, mentor and as a volunteer member of the community. Dr. Chuck has distinguished himself through his outstanding contributions to society and the medical profession.
