In 1969, I matched to an internship in Philadelphia (PGY1 was not yet applicable). Realizing I missed the West Coast, I returned to California the following year to a program that was recently under "new management" at UC Davis. Portions of the Sacramento County Hospital were still run by the county and when I arrived, Camellia Cottage was still a nursing home for county indigent patients. As I recall, it closed and patients transferred to the then "new" Extended Care Facility on 5 South. One of my rotations was to manage the ECF, where I discharged the last of the Camellia Cottage patients to a community nursing home. Serving on the medical school alumni board and/or being president was not even a thought. Like everybody else in training, I was just trying to learn to survive. These are special memories and I am sure each and every one of us who trained here has our own bundle of special moments. Of course, the night I was on ER duty and got food poisoning from the cafeteria shrimp cocktail is one memory I could do without. Having served on the Alumni Board for the past two years, I can say the Alumni Board is a very special group of volunteers. The board does not demand a lot of time. However, it does provide an opportunity for satisfying activity. We are proud of the scholarship program, which helps very deserving students attend the medical school. We could use a few more dollar donations (hint....hint). Perhaps the most fun is to attend our Welcome Reception for the first-year students. It is renewing to talk with students who have such passion for this profession, and their idealism should remind all of us why we entered medicine.

The campus is expanding and the new library and education building will be quite impressive. I look forward to telling you more about this project. I hope more of you will be willing to support the school. Your involvement with the board is welcome; contributions for the scholarship fund are recognized with gratitude. For those living far away, being a mentor to a student applying to medical school is a huge help to the legacy of excellence of our institution. It is very rewarding when a UC Davis School of Medicine graduate or resident contacts us to express how they feel about this very special school. For more information or to share your ideas for support, please contact Beth Abad at (916) 734-9416 or via email at edabad@ucdavis.edu.

The strength of an institution is not only measured by the current administration, students and faculty, but also by the dedication of its alumni.

Sincerely,
Eugene Ogrod M.D., J.D.
