UC Davis and Nicaraguan medical students will say grácias.
In keeping with the UC Davis School of Medicine tradition of serving the underserved and creating forums for exchange of diverse ideas, some of our medical students since 2003 have been working to strengthen and expand the reach of the MEDICOS program. The student-run MEDICOS (MEDical Inter-Cultural Opportunities for Students) Nicaragua program sponsors educational and cultural exchanges, and international medical experiences.
This global health opportunity not only exposes students to the health-care system in a third-world country, but also has created a close relationship between UC Davis and the medical school of UNAN (Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua) in Léon, Nicaragua.
Participants in MEDICOS Nicaragua work closely with UNAN medical students and learn what the life of a medical student in Nicaragua is like, and about the medical school and hospital system of Léon.
This winter, the MEDICOS program sponsored the visit of a UNAN exchange student to UC Davis. UC Davis students and faculty members are busy preparing for an enriching summer in Nicaragua, and look forward to bringing back lessons that can enhance the curriculum for all students and contribute to the Sacramento medical community.
