UC Davis Transplant Center

Dialysis Rate and Length of Hosptial Stay

The diagram below shows the percentage of patients requiring dialysis in the first week after transplant and the average length of stay in the hospital for the various transplant programs in Northern California. The need for dialysis in the first week after transplant is usually due to a kidney that is a “slow starter”.  One might expect that an increase in the use of kidneys from expanded criteria and older donors would result in more “slow starters” or longer hospital stays.  UC Davis has been a leader in the use of these types of kidneys while maintaining a very low rate of dialysis and short hospital stays.   (Source: Table 9, SRTR 1/13/09 Release)  www.ustransplant.org
