Endowments fuel momentum
(continued)

Endowed funds can also be used to support named chairs, professorships, scholarships, new facilities and equipment purchases.

"A variety of gift vehicles are possible as well," said Cornwell. "Donors can, for example, give outright gifts of money, securities or real estate. Or they can leave bequests in their wills or through revocable living trusts.

"One of the most popular gift methods, however, comes through the charitable remainder trust, which allows donors to make a larger gift to the cancer center than might otherwise be possible. Wayne and Jacque Bartholomew, long-time supporters of UC Davis, created one of these as a tribute to surgeon James E. Goodnight Jr. from whom Jacque and other family members have received exceptional care.

"They funded the trust with highly appreciated stock, valued at $600,000, and will receive life income from interest earned on the entire $600,000 in the trust (no capital gains tax). Additionally, they receive a significant income tax deduction and avoid estate taxes on the trust amount. Upon their deaths, the remaining principal in the trust will establish a perpetual endowment in honor of Dr. Goodnight to support cancer research."

Pooled income funds and charitable gift annuities, which also provide life income to the donor, allow gifts as small as $5,000.

"A minimum gift of $10,000 is required to establish an endowment," said Jacqueline Horan, development officer for the cancer center. "But endowments can also be created through life insurance, charitable lead trusts and life estates. All of these gift arrangements enable donors to give more than they ever dreamed possible to a cause that is dear to their hearts."

In addition to knowing one has made a difference by funding cancer research, donors become members of the Heritage Circle, a premier recognition and honorary society for those who have included UC Davis School of Medicine or Medical Center in their estate plans through a will, trust or other planned gift.
