Message from the program director

Dr. David L. DawsonThank you for your interest in the University of California, Davis integrated residency in vascular surgery.

The five-year clinical training program offers a broad exposure to core surgical disciplines, in addition to 36 months focused on vascular surgery. Residents learn the evaluation and management of surgical diseases, trauma and critical care, and systems-based medical practice. All aspects of vascular care are learned, including diagnosis, medical management, surgical care and use of endovascular procedure. Residents will gain a robust operative experience throughout the residency — traditional open, video-endoscopic, non-invasive endovascular, and hybrid procedures. Clinical facilities, imaging technologies, and informatics systems are state-of-the-art. Graduates of the residency will qualify to seek certification from the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery.

The educational program benefits from a unique partnership that involves UC Davis Health System, the Northern California VA Health Care System, and the David Grant USAF Medical Center. Because of this relationship, we offer two positions each year. One is for a military resident, one for a civilian. Military resident assignments are made annually by a joint service selection board. Candidates for the military position will come from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences or the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). The civilian position is filled through the National Resident Matching Program.

UC Davis offers excellent support for graduate medical education. Residents will also have opportunities to participate in scholarly activities, clinical research, University or community service, and many other professional development activities. Residents may also participate in additional training leading to qualification to seek board certification in Surgical Critical Care.

Northern California has many advantages to those to come here to live and to learn. Living in the Sacramento area offers opportunities to enjoy the climate, outdoor activities, wine country, and many cultural offerings.

We are proud to offer an exceptional educational experience, with engaged and talented students, residents, and fellows. Contact me, please, if you would like to learn more about UC Davis.

Sincerely,

David L. Dawson, M.D.
