Burke Snow, M.D.

Burke Snow, M.D.Burke Snow had the opportunity to spend a research year in East London, South Africa working on both Pediatric Surgery and General Surgery Services. He gained excellent clinical experience and also conducted a clinical research project on hydatid cyst disease in children in the Transkei region of South Africa. During his 4th clinical year he spent three months in South Lake Tahoe gaining rural surgery experience. In addition to general surgery, he was able obtain operative experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, and Otolaryngology at UC Davis’ South Lake Tahoe site. He highly recommends both opportunities to anyone who has an interest in global or rural health. He is working as a general surgeon in Washington state.

Rachel Russo, M.D.

Rachel Russo, M.D.Captain Rachel M. Russo is an Air Force deferred general surgery resident at the University of California Davis, in the Global and Rural Surgery tract. Her interests are in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) activities and civilian-military coordination during disaster response.  In July 2014, she became the first fully integrated resident to participate in the Rim of the Pacific international HA/DR exercise in Hawaii.  She serves as a National Healthcare Disaster Content Expert on an advisory panel in Washington, DC and as volunteer trauma faculty observer/controller for the Bushmaster Capstone exercise at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.  She is currently completing her second year of research at the Clinical Investigation Facility at David Grant Medical Center at Travis, AFB in the field of combat casualty care.  She is earning her Masters of Clinical Research at the University of California Davis. Her primary research project is on advancements in the use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA).  She plans to pursue fellowship in Trauma/Critical Care following the completion of residency.

Laura Goodman, M.D.

Laura Goodman, M.D.Laura Goodman started her general surgery residency at UC Davis in 2012, after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Following her third clinical year, she devoted two years to research and professional development, earning a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She completed public health research while living in Mongolia during her second research year, supported by a Fulbright Fellowship, Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowship, and Rose Traveling Fellowship. Her research focused on the epidemiology of congenital anomalies and a nation-wide assessment of pediatric surgical capacity. She has also been very involved in the organization of the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery.

Guy Jensen, M.D.

Guy Jensen, M.D.Guy Jensen attended medical school at the University of Washington prior to beginning his general surgery residency at UC Davis.  He is a Lieutenant in the US Navy reserves (IRR), who is in a deferred status for his general surgery training.  Prior to medical school he was an EMT and Firefighter in rural Idaho, and worked in rural health systems throughout the Northwestern United States during his medical school training.  During his research years he is obtaining a Master of Public Health Degree in Global Health from the University of Washington and conducting research on the training of military and civilian residents for work in low resource environments.  He continues to work with medical students interested in global health and organize the Dean's Monthly Global Health Night speaker series.
