Sports psychology

Our sports psychology mental skills training program focuses on the psychological factors of participation and performance in sport, exercise, and physical activity. The mind plays an essential role when setting appropriate goals and achieving success. A mental skills training program works to unlock the extraordinary powers of the mind to optimize training, competitive performance, and personal development.

The program is divided into four components: Performance Enhancement, Health Promotion, Injury Rehabilitation, and Personal Development. Each component is tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. Whether you are initiating an exercise program or an athlete of elite status, the sports performance program has the capacity to meet your needs.

Performance enhancement

The UC Davis Sports Performance Program sees psychological skills training as a necessary component of sporting excellence. This program provides the knowledge and tools essential to maximize performance by integrating mental skills with physical training.

Health promotion

The mind plays an important role when making lifestyle changes. The obstacles that present themselves are often a repetition of a previous attempted change. Planning for those obstacles and generating positive coping resources are key to reaching your goals and promoting a healthy lifestyle. This service works to generate a customized program for greater self-understanding and a positive mental perspective leading to success.

  • Establish goals that will promote weight loss, health and well-being
  • Enhance motivation and commitment to change
  • Master cognitions and emotions that challenge adherence
  • Build confidence in your ability to manage lapses

Injury rehabilitation

People with injuries may require assistance when adjusting to the challenges inherent in the rehabilitation process. Issues related to limited physical activity or competition, adhering to physical therapy, tolerating pain, and the emotional roller coaster of rehabilitation need attention. This service stresses the role that psychological factors play in healing, health promotion, disease development and remediation.
  • Working with the emotional responses to injury
  • Adhering to physical therapy
  • Managing fear of re-injury

Personal development

This program works to remove the personal barriers that inhibit performance potential in sport and life. It addresses developmental issues and/or patterns that interfere with happiness, health, and success.
  • Perfectionism
  • Eating disorders
  • Obligatory exercise and overtraining
