Physiological tests

All physiological procedures come with a medical clearance exam, body composition analysis via skinfolds and can be done while cycling, running or rowing. The initial test includes a detailed analysis of results and a training consultation. Subsequent tests include a brief discussion of the test results and how to apply them.

VO2max and ventilatory threshold

$150

An excellent first evaluation, this test gives a good picture of overall fitness level and performance potential. Furthermore, from this test we can provide heart rates and power (for cycling and rowing) or speed (for running) values that correlate to the athlete’s ventilatory threshold (a good estimate of lactate threshold). From this value, we can establish training zones and intensities for the athlete.

Lactate profile

$150

The blood lactate profile is the most important predictor of endurance performance potential in steady-state events (e.g. time trials in cycling, cross-country skiing, rowing, speed skating, triathlons, and running races, especially marathons). The lactate profile test (with determination of lactate threshold) is the “gold standard” used by elite endurance athletes to determine optimal training intensities and is the most effective way to track the effectiveness of training. After determining a lactate profile, we will provide training zones based on both heart rate and power (for cycling and rowing) or speed (for running). This test can also provide the athlete with optimal paces for racing.

Conconi

$100

A simpler for determining heart rate trainig zones, the Conconi test is simpler than a VO2max or Lactate test. There is no taking of blood or masks, just you, your heart, and an increasing workrate. Accurate and repeatable, this test will help us determine heartrate training zones and intensities.

Anaerobic power assessment

$100

Excellent for competitive power athletes – sprinters, track cyclists, criterium specialists, etc. - the results from this test indicate an athlete’s ability to produce energy for short-term, very, very intense efforts. Sustained and peak anaerobic power production and a power loss curve will be determined from the test. Following the test, a lactate clearance curve will be taken to monitor recovery potential. This test is performed on a Monark Wingate stationary bicycle.
