Our program participates with the national matching program. You will need to contact the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) at www.nrmp.org for the Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialty Match Applicant Agreement.

Prerequisite requirements

We require board eligible or board certified Family Practice residency graduates. We maintain our academic affiliation with the UC Davis School of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine, where each of the sports medicine core faculty hold volunteer clinical faculty appointments.

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires that sports medicine Fellowship programs provide their fellows ongoing experience in their primary care specialty. To date, our fellows have maintained their primary care skills by teaching and seeing patients in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, as well as providing primary care services at that center.

Deadlines

October 1, 2007 – Final day for submitting applications to our office.

October - November 2007 – Interviews will be conducted

December 19, 2007 – Final date for the acceptance of rank order lists via the NRMP Web site.

January 9, 2008 – Match results will be available.

Educational experience

The fellow will spend two days per week in the UC Davis Medical Group Sports Medicine Clinic in Sacramento, under the direct supervision of Drs. David Cosca and Jeffrey Tanji. These busy, referral-based, orthopedic sports medicine clinics provide the fellow with a broad exposure to common, and uncommon, musculoskeletal conditions. The clinics are run simultaneously with our orthopedic surgery colleagues, Drs. Richard Marder and Kirk Lewis, and we maintain a very collegial collaborative practice.

The fellow will spend one day per week in the Intercollegiate Athletic (ICA) Sports Medicine Clinics at UC Berkeley under the supervision of Cindy Chang, M.D. This relationship, optional and informal for several years, was formalized in 1999, such that this experience is now a requirement of the fellowship program. The fellow can expect ample opportunity to become involved with the care of NCAA Division I Intercollegiate athletes. The fellow will be scheduled to see athletes in the ICA clinic and in the training room, and will be expected to provide a modest amount of sideline event coverage. (Although UC Berkeley is a one-hour commute each way from Sacramento, all of our previous fellows have felt that the educational experience more than justified the travel.)

The fellow will be expected to teach/precept in the UC Davis Department of Family and Community Medicine one half-day per week, and will also be scheduled to provide primary care medical services at that clinic one half-day per week.

Finally, the fellow will spend one half-day per week gaining experience in exercise testing and exercise physiology. These half days will be scheduled at the UC Davis Sports Performance Program laboratory at our office in Sacramento. The remaining half-day per week is left open as protected time to allow the fellow to pursue scholarly activities, i.e. reading, preparing lectures/presentations, and writing. At minimum, we expect the fellow to present a case presentation or research project at the annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) meeting and to give a grand rounds lecture for the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

The fellow is offered the opportunity to spend the month of January with the Tahoe/Truckee Medical Group in Truckee, Calif., under the supervision of Rick Ganong, M.D. Fellows can expect to spend four days per week side-by-side with the physicians providing urgent care services at the base of the Squaw Valley Ski Resort. Past fellows have found this experience particularly valuable for exposure to acute knee and shoulder injuries, as well as exposure to acute fracture management, including closed reduction under hematoma block, splinting and casting.

Research

The UC Davis/UC Berkeley Sports Medicine fellowship is currently structured with a heavy emphasis on the clinical aspects of sports medicine. Although we do not have a formal research requirement, we provide the resources for our fellow to participate in the annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Sports Medicine Fellow’s research conference in July. In addition, we certainly encourage and provide support for our fellows to design and implement their own research protocols, and several of our past fellows have completed and published independent research projects. The UC Davis Sports Performance Program offers a fertile opportunity for development of research projects, and several projects are now under way in the department.

Special features/events

  1. Pre-participation physical examinations, game coverage, and training room experiences are all available at the NCAA Division I level at UC Berkeley and UC Davis, and at local high schools.
  2. Exposure to, and assistance with, the pre-participation examinations, exercise treadmill testing and on-site game coverage for local NBA and WNBA teams, in conjunction with the sports medicine faculty.
  3. Optional involvement with the California International Marathon, Sacramento regional triathlons, and local running events.
  4. Attendance at the Annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) meeting.
  5. Attendance at the Fellows Research Conference for AMSSM.

Salary and benefits

The sports medicine fellow is paid commensurate with the salary of a fourth year resident at UC Davis. For the academic year 2005-2006, the salary was $49,400 plus benefits including health, dental, vision, and disability. There are 20 days of paid vacation and four days of CME leave.
