Radiation therapist training
Radiation therapy technology students from Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, Calif., rotate through our department on a quarterly basis for clinical training. The fully accredited, two-year program is administrated by Foothill College instructors, but coordinated on-site by a UC Davis radiation oncology therapy supervisor. UC Davis accepts only second-year students fulfilling their practicum requirements. Typically, three students at a time work closely with radiation therapists, receiving firsthand mentoring during their thirty-two hours per week in our department. They attend didactic classes at Foothill College one day a week.
Through our partnership with Foothill College, our department is fulfilling the UC Davis School of Medicine's outreach commitment, promoting "opportunities in medicine for all people," and the UC Davis Health System's mission to establish "partnerships with community-based organizations by providing training and development opportunities." In turn, our therapists benefit from the increased demands of demonstrating and teaching cutting-edge techniques. Finally, our entire department gains from the several well-trained therapists who consequently join our team on a permanent basis.
