H. William Bonekat, D.O. View profile as PDF

Philosophy of Care

I worked part-time as a respiratory therapist during medical school and enjoyed pulmonary medicine, leading me to make it my specialty. I deal with patients as a whole, not just with a single problem. I also strive to be empathetic to patients in need and to incorporate humor into my interaction with them. The ability of patients to feel comfortable with the physician who is taking care of them is most important for establishing and maintaining good health.

Clinical Interests

In addition to teaching human physiology and pulmonary medicine, for which he was recognized with a 1995 Kaiser Foundation Hospitals Teaching Award for Excellence, H. William Bonekat co-directs the UC Davis Sleep Disorders Laboratory. His impressive research projects include respiratory control and dyspnea, neuromuscular disease, and cardiovascular consequences of sleep apnea. His expertise relating to respiratory and pulmonary issues has been widely published.
