James E. Boggan, M.D.
- Professor of Neurological Surgery
- Acting Chairperson, Department of Neurological Surgery
- Co-director of the Center for Skull-Base Surgery
- Co-director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Biophotonics
Dr. Boggan heads a specialty team that treats difficult-to-resect tumors of the head, neck and surrounding structures. He also is an expert in pediatric neurosurgery.
Dr. Boggan is interested in the innovative use of lasers and other energy sources for treating brain cancers, including photodynamic therapy and neutron-capture therapy for treatment of glioblastomas. His research investigations include retinoic acid receptor expression in primary and metastatic brain tumors, and whether gadolinium texaphyrins (contrast MRI agents) can make high-grade gliomas and glioblastomas more radiosensitive.
