More than 115 UC Davis physicians have been included on a list of the Sacramento region's best doctors by an organization that bases its selections on surveys of other physicians. The story is featured in the December 2012 issue of Sacramento Magazine and currently available on news stands.

The list compiled by Best Doctors, Inc. consists of 194 Sacramento area doctors covering 51 specialties -- nearly 60 percent of whom are UC Davis doctors. Some UC Davis doctors on the list have joint appointments and were listed by another medical group or hospital.

Survey of fellow physicians

The list is based on responses to a survey of physicians that asks them: "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?"

Pulmonary medicine specialist Susan Murin is one of 118 UC Davis physicians included in this year's "Best Doctors" list.

According to Best Doctors, founded in 1989 by two physicians affiliated with Harvard Medical School, this survey replicates "the informal, peer-to-peer referral process that doctors themselves use to determine the most appropriate physicians for individual cases."

During the survey period, the doctors also may nominate and provide information on other physicians who they think should be considered in the peer-review process.
