The annual recognition includes up-and-coming local professionals under age 40 who have made important community contributions. Selected from more than 200 nominations by a panel of outside judges, the 2012 honorees were celebrated Thursday evening at an event in downtown Sacramento.

In addition to being a UC Davis professor of surgery, teacher and trauma surgeon, Galante is a member of the U.S. Naval reserves who has served with distinction both in the U.S. and Afghanistan. His research focuses on improving medical treatment in response to disasters and utilizing military medical technology to benefit civilian practice. As a teacher and mentor, he is training health-care providers who treat those in the armed forces.

“While in Afghanistan, Joe realized that many of the medical personnel deployed to care for our military were inadequately trained to deal with the level of injury seen in our wounded soldiers,” said Professor of Surgery David Wisner in his nomination letter for Galante. “Upon his return last year, he has dedicated his career to correcting that deficit.”

As assistant director of hospital and clinics, Marsh oversees staff in a variety of UC Davis Medical Center departments, including the level I trauma center and Center for Professional Practice of Nursing. He has led several patient-care initiatives, including a telephone hotline to summon immediate assistance and a streamlined system for specialty care referrals. He is also known for volunteering to support community economic development and youth leadership, including organizing a program to help young adults successfully transition out of foster care.

In her letter nominating Marsh, Ann Madden Rice, chief executive officer of the medical center, said, “His infectious enthusiasm drives him to identify the region’s opportunities and challenges, collaborate with community partners who share his interest in the greater good, and develop an ever-increasing leading role in building a stronger and more vital Sacramento.”
