Effective April 1, Mark Underwood will be the new division head of neonatology.
Underwood’s appointment was made after an extensive national search that focused on identifying a leader with superb clinical, educational and academic skills.
“Mark brings all three to the position, and is well known for his thoughtful clinical approach, enthusiastic commitment to education, and innovative research on the microbiome and neonatal intestinal development,” said Robin Steinhorn, professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
Underwood started at UC Davis as a neonatology fellow in 2003, became an assistant professor in 2006 and has been an associate professor of clinical pediatrics at UC Davis Children’s Hospital since 2012. His research interests include necrotizing enterocolitis, development of intestinal innate immunity and clinical trials of probiotics and prebiotics in pre-term infants.
His vision is to build upon the strengths of the division including excellence in clinical care and teaching plus research in three key areas: neonatal nutrition, pulmonary hypertension, and protecting the neonatal brain.
