Children's hospital holds bereavement conference

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) —

The Children's Hospital Bereavement Conference, an all-day conference designed to help health-care providers understand how to better support adolescents and young adults who have experienced a loss, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the UC Davis MIND Institute, 2850 50th St., Sacramento.

The conference is designed to help health-care providers give comprehensive, compassionate bereavement support to young people. It will address legal, ethical and cultural issues associated with working with adolescents and young adults.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Darcie D. Sims, a well known grief-management specialist and internationally recognized speaker on grief and hope. Other featured speakers will include Jann Murray-Garcia, a pediatrician and assistant adjunct professor in the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, the recipient of the 2011-2012 Chancellor's Achievement Award for Diversity and Community; Don Lewis, licensed clinical social worker and bereavement and volunteer coordinator for the UC Davis Hospice Program; and Hannah Hunter, UC Davis Children's Hospital art therapist. Lewis and Hunter offer a Young Adult Bereavement Support Group.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., with the conference beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 4: 30 p.m. The admission fee for UC Davis employees is $35, $25 for students, and $100 for community members.
