School of Medicine earns renewed accreditation
The nation’s accrediting authority for M.D. programs has voted to continue accreditation of the UC Davis School of Medicine. The renewed status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) follows a lengthy systematic review of the school as well as a site visit earlier this year. It provides UC Davis with a new eight-year term.
A report about the school, which the organization used to determine that UC Davis met established standards for function, structure and performance, noted some of the medical school’s strengths, including its student-run clinics, the Office of Medical Education’s support to instructors and faculty, and facilities such as the Education Building and the Center for Health and Technology.
“Reaccreditation was the product of excellent teamwork from the deans, faculty, students and staff,” said Mark Servis, who led the accreditation process as senior associate dean for medical education. “Over the past three years, in meeting after meetings after meetings, everyone worked together and committed to understanding and responding to LCME accreditation standards, which resulted in the most successful site visit in our school’s history.”
Servis noted that of LCME’s 130 accreditation standards, UC Davis was fully compliant with all but one of them (ED-30), which refers to student needs for fair and more timely assessments and evaluations of their coursework and clerkship rotations. The committee also requested the school to continue monitoring for faculty diversity (particularly in the recruitment of African-Americans/Blacks and Hispanics), provide formative feedback to students in their preclinical curriculum, and ensure a process that enables broad faculty participation in decision-making about the medical education program.
“We welcomed the rigorous LMCE review because it represents a healthy catalyst for improvement and change,” said Servis. “We had outstanding results, but there’s always room for improvement. By embracing the challenges, UC Davis School of Medicine can serve as a model for how to successfully navigate and benefit from the LCME accreditation process.”
