UC Davis pulmonary and critical care medicine chief fellow Nisha Gidwani will lead a “Walk with a Doc” on Nov. 16 in Tahoe Park in Sacramento.
The walk is free and begins at 9 a.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m. Participants should meet in the gazebo on the 61st Street side of the park between 8th and 11th avenues. The event will begin with a brief health discussion, after which Gidwani will lead the group in two loops around the park for a total of 1.34 miles.
Walk with a Doc is a year-round national effort to reduce the risks of heart conditions, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes and other diseases. Gidwani chose to lead a walk during COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) Awareness Month to encourage those with lung disease to increase their physical activity.
“Walking is an accessible, low-impact way for people with COPD to improve their exercise tolerance and reduce stress at the same time,” said Gidwani. “I encourage family members to come as well, since doing physical activity together with loved ones is a great source of support.”
Walk With a Doc is locally sponsored by the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society. For more information, visit http://ssvms.org/programs/walkwithadoc.aspx
