UC Davis Medical Center awarded an "A" on the Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Score
The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit coalition of some of the country’s largest employers and health-care purchasers, has awarded UC Davis Medical Center the highest grade possible, an “A,” on its most recent Hospital Safety Score, an evaluation that ranks hospitals nationwide on the likelihood that its patients will be free from preventable harm during their inpatient stays.
The grade assigned to a hospital is based on an analysis of its patient-safety outcomes, such as rates of inpatient injuries, infections and medical errors, and efforts toward improvement. The most recent grades were announced earlier this week.
"This top grade is clear recognition of the hard work and commitment of every single employee at UC Davis Medical Center ― nurses, physicians and allied-health professionals ― to provide every patient with the highest-quality care in the safest possible environment,” said medical center Chief Executive Officer Ann Madden Rice.
The Hospital Safety Score is developed under the guidance of a national panel of patient-safety experts who use 28 performance measures that are publicly reported at the national level and deemed the most significant and reliable available. These include measures reported by the federal government via the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, those reported on the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and, where necessary, additional secondary data sources.
The 28 measures that make up the Hospital Safety Score include harms to patients such as:
- Central-line associated bloodstream infections
- Falls and trauma
- Very severe pressure ulcers
- Preventable complications associated with surgery, such as foreign objects retained in the body, postoperative hazards, and accidental punctures or lacerations
- Catheter-associated urinary tract infections
- Surgical-site infections for major colon surgery
The Hospital Safety Score is one of the many rankings, ratings and scorecards in which the medical center participates to measure its patient-care quality and patient satisfaction.
The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey allows purchasers to structure their contracts and purchasing to reward the highest performing hospitals. The Leapfrog Group was founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable and national funders and is now independently operated with support from its purchaser and other members.
