Talented UC Davis School of Medicine student receives scholarship
Annahita Sarcon, a 4th year student in the UC Davis School of Medicine, has been awarded a Ruth G. White Scholarship from the California chapter of the national Philanthropic Education Organization. Each year, the chapter awards scholarships to California female residents based on character, integrity, academic excellence and financial need.
"As the cost of medical education increases, scholarships like this support students, particularly woman, and enable them to continue their studies in science and medicine," said Sarcon, who plans to spend the summer on a research project at Zurich University Hospital in Switzerland.
Sarcon currently is on a Fulbright Scholarship in Spain, where she is conducting cardiac stem cell research. She holds a master's degree in molecular biology and biochemistry and a master's degree in physiology and biophysics, both from Georgetown University School of Medicine.
The Ruth G. White P.E.O. Scholarship was established in 1957 in memory of Ruth Garten White, a physician and former president of the California chapter. White graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1927 and practiced as a pediatrician in Southern California. A trust in her name was established after her death to promote educational opportunities for women in the field of medicine and working toward advanced degrees.
"I admire Dr. Ruth G. White and her support for the next generation of women in medicine," said Sarcon, who acknowledged several other women for their support, including her mother, who was a biology teacher, and her UC Davis School of Medicine mentor and advisor, Colleen Sweeney, an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular medicine.
