In recognition for achievements in sustainability and waste reduction, UC Davis Health has received a Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector.
The Partner for Change Award recognizes UC Davis Health’s ongoing commitment to improving its environmental performance and efforts in achieving a top standard of excellence in sustainability. The award is given to health care facilities that are changing their practices to become more sustainable and have achieved progress in areas such as waste reduction, renewable energy adoption, food purchasing and mercury elimination. They also must have a recycling rate of at least 10 percent for their entire waste stream.
“UC Davis Health is proud of its sustainable practices, which improve efficiencies and reduce waste while maintaining patient-focused quality of care and safety,” said Ann Madden Rice, CEO of UC Davis Medical Center. “Sustainability is central to the health of our patients, staff and community.”
“Green” building design and energy efficiency are featured in several key projects at UC Davis Health, including the Children’s Surgery Center and North Addition Office Building. Efforts are taken to target energy performance goals, while new construction projects incorporate LEED goals and UC Sustainability and climate protection policies. UC Davis Health purchases Clean Energy from the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD). The health system also integrates practices sustainability in its Building Operations, Transportation, Food Services, Recycling and Waste Management, and Water Systems. Members of our Sustainability Committee, notably Manager of Facilities Design and Construction Tom Emme, have provided leadership in reviewing and implementing our sustainability practices.
