For the second year in a row, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization today has recognized UC Davis Medical Center as a "Leader in Healthcare Equality" for creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBT patients and employees.
UC Davis Medical Center is one of only 71 medical centers nationwide to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation in its 2012 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), which reviewed 407 health-care institutions. UC Davis Medical Center earned perfect scores for the following four core criteria:
- Protecting all LGBT patients from discrimination with inclusive patient non-discrimination policies
- Granting equal visitation access to same-sex couples and same-sex parents through LGBT-inclusive visitation policies
- Providing LGBT cultural competency training to all employees
- Protecting all LGBT employees from discrimination with inclusive employment non-discrimination policies
"We are proud of the work that we have accomplished to improve access and deliver high-quality patient care to meet the health-care needs of the LGBT community," said UC Davis Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Ann Madden Rice. "We will continue to strive to enhance the patient-care experience and address health disparities that this patient population has traditionally experienced."
