UC Davis Health System’s Women in Medicine and Health Sciences (WIMHS) Program, led by Amparo Villablanca, has been awarded the Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) Leadership Award by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The program was honored for its role in demonstrating a significant impact on the advancement of women’s careers in academic medicine and science.
For the past 21 years, GWIMS Leadership Awards have been given to an individual and/or an organization, although awards are not granted yearly. WIMHS was chosen for the 2016 Organizational Leadership Award. The honor will be awarded at the AAMC’s annual meeting in Seattle, Wash., on Nov. 12.
Awards are competitive and nominees are evaluated by the GWIMS steering committee for extraordinary, innovative and far-reaching contributions that:
- Promote women’s leadership through the individual's/organization’s accomplishments
- Encourage and advocate for the development of academic women leaders
- Improve the educational and professional environment for sustaining women in academic medicine
- Enhance the development of women faculty into positions of greater leadership; and/or
- Inspire women to be leaders through their own careers in academic medicine
“One of my goals has been for WIMHS to be an AAMC leader in women’s careers in biomedical sciences,” said Amparo Villablanca, director of the WIMHS program and professor of cardiovascular medicine. “It is an honor to have been selected for this award and to have the AAMC recognize our efforts. I look forward to continuing to work with our leadership team and colleagues at UC Davis and nationwide to ensure that all women can reach their full potential in academic medicine and health sciences, and have rewarding and fulfilling careers.”
Since its founding in 2000 by Villablanca and Lydia Howell, chair of the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, WIMHS has supported the careers of women in biomedical health sciences at UC Davis. Catalyzing change, creating paths for leadership, providing a supportive and equitable culture for women, contributing to scholarly work in the field, creating networking and mentoring opportunities, recognizing the accomplishments of women faculty, and bringing distinguished women scholars and lecturers to the health system are some of the program's activities.
