Carter to be featured in statewide mental health documentary

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.)

Cameron Carter, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will be featured in “A Choice to Heal: Mental Health in California,” a new documentary that explores groundbreaking approaches to prevention and early intervention for Californians with mental illnessess. Hosted by actress Mariel Hemingway, the program will air on Saturday, May 31 from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on television station KOVR 13 in Sacramento.

The documentary is sponsored by the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. “A Choice to Heal” also will air on KCBS 2 in Los Angeles, KPIX 5 in San Francisco and CBS 47 in Fresno.

Carter was honored in 2012 by the Division of Behavioral Health Services of the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services as a Mental Health Champion for his research and clinical activities and for founding the Early Diagnosis and Preventive Treatment of Psychotic Illness (EDAPT) program. EDAPT provides state-of-the-art assessments and evidence-based practices for early identification and intervention for psychotic disorders, primarily among youth and young adults in the early stages of psychosis. Through EDAPT, patients receive targeted medication and psychosocial interventions and occupational therapy, with the goals of early diagnosis, treatment and disability prevention.
