Now he needs some help deciding on the winner.

Knoepfler is seeking input about his top 16 nominees for the new honor. He’s hoping people will look through the stellar group of individuals and vote for who they think is most deserving of the award.

Voters can visit Knoepfler’s stem cell blog to see the list of nominees and some of the reasons why they are considered outstanding candidates for the award.

“Ultimately, I will choose the winner,” said Knoepfler, in a blog post yesterday. “But your [the public’s] votes could have important influence, especially in the case of a tie-breaker situation where I might have trouble picking between a few outstanding candidates. Given the stellar group of nominees, the likelihood of this happening is not so small.”

Knoepfler, an associate professor of cell biology and human anatomy, hopes to create a little more excitement about stem cell science and make the recognition rewarding. He says the Stem Cell Person of the Year winner will be a difference-maker; someone who takes a risk to help others. The honor includes a $1,000 cash award, which Knoepfler is funding by himself.

The deadline for voting is 11:59 p.m. on December 31.
