String quartet delights Medical Center staff, visitors and patients

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.)

A string quartet, featuring UC Davis faculty and friends, delighted staff, visitors and patients in the hospital lobby yesterday by playing Christmas carols, Hannukah songs and other holiday favorites.

The Friends Quartet plays Deck the Halls in the hospital lobby (view video on Firefox or Chrome platforms).

The mini-concert began with the Wassail Song and included the holiday classics It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Deck the Halls, Away in the Manger, Angels We Have Heard on High, We Wish You a Merry Chirstmas and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. It was followed by a few French Christmas Carols, a Chanukah song and Christmas Pops arranged by award-winning composer and producer Steve W. Mauldin.

The group, who meets monthly to play classical and pop arrangements, includes: UC Davis physicians Anthony Philipps (pediatrics) and Suzanne Eidson-Ton (family practice);  Mary Fichera, spouse of a UC Davis staff member, and Abigail Thompson, chair of the math department on the Davis campus.

All began playing music when they were kids. Mary Fichera, who plays the violin, has the distinction of having played professionally as a member of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra.
