The award, which was presented during a ceremony attended by more 300 renowned abdominal radiologists at the society’s recent national meeting, is given to present or past members of the organization who have made substantial contributions to the field of abdominal radiology.

McGahan is a renowned interventional and diagnostic radiologist who began his medical career as a resident at UC Davis Medical Center in 1975. Since that time, he has pioneered the use of several innovative techniques, including the use of radiofrequency ablation (a minimally invasive procedure that sends high-frequency electrical currents through a tiny probe) to heat and destroy cancer cells in primary and metastatic liver, renal and lung tumors.

McGahan has investigated the use of tissue ablation for other organs, such as the prostate and breast. And he pioneered several other interventional procedures, including the development of percutaneous cholecystostomy, which involves the image-guided placement of a drainage catheter into the gallbladder.

He is the author of more than 200 research articles and abstracts as well as a popular presenter at national and international meetings.

In addition, McGahan has been a chairperson for the American College of Radiology’s national Accreditation Program of Ultrasound Practices. He serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals and has edited six textbooks, including "Diagnostic Ultrasound, A Logical Approach" and, more recently, the "Atlas of Ultrasound Measurements."

While his clinical and research achievements have earned deserved praise, McGahan's down-to-earth, friendly demeanor also has endeared him to colleagues, students, staff and patients.

"Despite his amazing accomplishments, Dr. McGahan remains one of the kindest and humblest individuals I have worked with," said Ramit Lamba, professor and chief of abdominal imaging at UC Davis Health. "He continues to be a source of inspiration to his trainees and colleagues.”
