“Laboratory professionals play a vital role in every aspect of health care,” said Lydia P. Howell, professor and chair of pathology and laboratory medicine at UC Davis. “They are essential members of the patient-care team who perform critical tests that enable physicians to make correct diagnoses and provide the best outcomes for patients. The annual Medical Laboratory Professionals Week gives us the opportunity to recognize the important work that our staff does every day and throughout the year to help save lives.”
The Clinical Laboratory processes over 5 million clinical tests each year to gain valuable information about the health of patients. The laboratories are located at three primary sites:
- The Clinical Laboratory on the second floor of the Pavilion features two robotic lines and instruments that quickly and efficiently conduct blood and chemical analyses 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- The Specialty Testing Center at Business Drive performs a variety of specialized tests using state-of-the-art analyzers and testing methods
- In the Pathology Building, surgical pathology, histology and cytology studies are performed.
The laboratories also process specimens from other care providers in the area, making UC Davis an important partner in improving health in the community.
