The young and the young at heart are invited to a free and festive evening of music featuring perennial favorite Mumbo Gumbo, a cornucopia of wares from the weekly Farmers Market, and the Kids Zone at the annual outdoor concert, presented by UC Davis Children’s Hospital. The event is co-hosted by the UC Davis Health System Community Advisory Board and Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California.
The concert will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the lawn adjacent to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California at the intersection of X and 45th streets in Sacramento. The smoke- and alcohol-free event is open to the public. There is no charge for attendance. Free parking will be available in the Shriners garage.
For more than 20 years, Mumbo Gumbo has created a style of music that it describes as the sound of pure joy. The eclectic septet’s music incorporates many genres, from rock to soul, Afropop to lush balladry and Zydeco to country, to create a celebratory and danceable musical blend.
UC Davis Children’s Hospital representatives, including staff from the Trauma and Injury Prevention Program, will be on hand to share tips for keeping kids safe and healthy year-round. The trauma program will fit and distribute free bicycle helmets, provided courtesy of Kohl’s Cares™. In addition, there will be games, crafts, bounce houses, and clowns in the Kids Zone. Radio Disney will host an interactive show before the concert to get kids up and moving.
“UC Davis Health System is essential to the health and well-being of our community,” said Sue Hussey, chair of the Community Advisory Board. "The Community Advisory Board is dedicated to helping foster strong relationships between the UC Davis Health System and the broader community. We are pleased to be cosponsoring such a fun event."
Participants are encouraged to come out and dance the night away. Event goers may bring blankets or lawn chairs and picnic baskets, or purchase food from vendors at the UC Davis Health System Farmers Market, which offers an assortment of farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, artisan cheeses, baked goods, specialty items and more.
The outdoor concert celebrates UC Davis’ relationships with adjacent neighborhoods and thanks local residents, as well as the broader community, for their support and engagement. The event also is an opportunity to say thank you to the many thousands of faculty members, students and employees across the university who help accomplish the exceptional work that makes UC Davis a world leader in education, research and clinical care.
The UC Davis Health System Community Advisory Board helps facilitate that community engagement. It is a valued partner that helps the health system achieve its patient-care, research, education and public-service missions. The group’s 28 members are business and nonprofit leaders who reflect the needs, beliefs and cultures of the region. Members serve four-year terms on a volunteer basis and are routinely solicited for their views and opinions and often influence decisions that affect the broader community.
