Renowned wellness expert Michael F. Roizen, also known as "The Enforcer," will speak as part of the Pioneers in Integrative Medicine lecture series on Tuesday, May 1 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Education Building, Lecture Hall 1222.
Roizen will discuss the connection between nutrition, health and extending both the longevity and quality of life. His lecture, titled "RealAge and YOU: The Cleveland Clinic Experience on Controlling Your Genes and What it Means for You," is based on his work with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the country's top five hospitals, and his two best-selling book series.
In 2007, the Cleveland Clinic appointed Roizen chief wellness officer -- the first such position created at a major U.S. health-care institution. In this role, and as chair of the clinic's Wellness Institute, established in 2008, Roizen helps design, implement and promote the hospital's pioneering efforts to "aggressively advocate healthy living" among its employees, patients and community members.
Novel measures have included pursuing a smoke-free campus, banning trans fats and sugared beverages from the cafeteria and vending machines, and offering free yoga classes and gym memberships to employees. The Cleveland Clinic's revolutionary employee wellness program is serving as a model to other corporations across the United States.
On the media front, Roizen is a co-founder of RealAge, a service providing personal health tools to consumers, and he currently chairs its Scientific Advisory Board. His best-selling general-audience RealAge book series began with "RealAge: Are You as Young as You Can Be?" The latest in the series, "YOU: Losing Weight: The Owner's Manual to Simple and Healthy Weight Loss," was published in May 2011.
His best-selling You book series is the result of a fruitful partnership with Mehmet Oz, beginning with "YOU: The Owner's Manual." He and Oz -- collectively known as the "You Docs" -- write a monthly column for Reader's Digest, and a quarterly column for the nursing magazine, Every Woman. Roizen frequently appears on "The Dr. Oz Show" as "The Enforcer." View a clip of Roizen in action.
Roizen has been recognized with over 20 professional lectureships, and has appeared on multiple television shows, from "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Today" to CNN, "20/20" and "Good Morning America." A graduate of the UC San Francisco School of Medicine and former dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President for Biomedical Sciences at SUNY Upstate, Roizen is past chair of a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee, a former editor for six medical journals, and has many publications and patents (both domestic and international).
"Dr. Roizen brings to UC Davis a unique perspective on how to promote wellness at the individual and organizational levels," said Rosane Oliveira, assistant director of the Integrative Medicine Program. "With mounting health-care costs contributing to our nation's financial problems, Mike Roizen's science-based approach to healthy living is an important contribution to healing ourselves and our economy."
Roizen's address is the fourth in the Pioneers in Integrative Medicine lecture series organized by the new Integrative Medicine Program.
