Media advisory: UC Davis School of Medicine welcomes new class of future physicians

110 incoming UC Davis School of Medicine students who make up the Class of 2018.

Official ceremony (known as “Induction”) welcoming medical students to UC Davis. The event marks the first step in the students’ medical training and studies. 

Thursday, July 31, 2014. 3:30–5 p.m., with a reception to follow.

UC Davis Pavilion — Activities and Recreation Center, located in Davis off of La Rue Road, south of Covell Boulevard.

The ceremony begins with a Scottish pipe and drum band marching. The students, wearing their new medical coats, follow closely behind, marching past hundreds of proud parents, family members and friends.

Each student is individually called to the stage to receive a stethoscope commemorating their induction to medical school. Following the ceremony, the newly initiated medical students will join family, friends and UC Davis faculty for a reception and photo opportunities.

The school received more than 6,000 applications for the 110 slots at the school. Most of the incoming class is from California. More than 40 percent of the students represent populations historically underrepresented in medicine.

Instruction begins Monday, Aug. 4, on the Sacramento campus of UC Davis.
