(SACRAMENTO, Calif.)

Gandara received the award June 1 at the Chicago History Museum on the first day of the 2017 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, or ASCO, which brings together more than 30,000 oncology professionals from around the world.

“Considering the luminaries in cancer care and research who have won this award in previous years, I am greatly honored to join them,” Gandara said of the award. “I owe acknowledgement to the team effort of my colleagues and collaborators at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, without whom I could never have achieved this accomplishment.”

Gandara, winner in the lung cancer category, was among 12 Giants of Care inductees. Other inductees were named in: breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, hematologic malignancies, melanoma, radiation oncology, scientific advances/drug development, pediatric oncology, supportive/palliative/geriatric care, immune-oncology and surgical oncology.

Nominated by the oncology community, finalists were selected by a five-member advisory board of renowned oncologists, and finalists were voted on by a 90-member committee of leading physicians in oncology.

“Each inductee continues to help propel the field of oncology forward through their commitment to innovative and groundbreaking contributions in cancer treatment and research,” said Michael J. Hennessy Jr., president of Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc., OncLive’s parent company. “They provide hope to cancer patients and their families and are an inspiration to the future generations of researchers and practitioners who continue advancing toward a cure for these diseases.”

Gandara joined the cancer center in 1992 as associate director of clinical research and played an important role in helping UC Davis attain National Cancer Institute designation in 2002. He currently serves as the cancer center’s senior advisor for experimental therapeutics and has led the effort to advance leading-edge approaches to lung cancer treatment, including targeted therapies. He is renowned internationally for his work designing and leading clinical trials of new treatments as well as in the development of pre-clinical animal models of lung cancer. He chaired the lung cancer committee at the international clinical trial network SWOG for 17 years before stepping down at the end of 2016.

“My overall research theme has been finding the right treatment for the right patient at the right time,” Gandara said. “This remains as true today as it was when I began.”
