The UC Davis Injury and Trauma Prevention Program has received a grant for $233,774 from Kohl’s Cares® to support its child and adolescent injury prevention efforts in the Sacramento area. Kohl’s will formally present the donation at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital free Community Concert at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.12.
Since 2005, Kohl’s has donated more than $1.9 million to UC Davis Children’s Hospital to support its children’s health initiatives. This year’s donation will support the UC Davis Children’s Hospital Kohl’s Buckle Up to Grow Up program, which provides car seats, bicycle helmets and life jackets and safety education for children from underserved families.
Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death for children over 1 year old, and the majority of these injuries can be prevented with education and the proper use of safety equipment like car seats, helmets and life jackets. Last year, the UC Davis Kohl’s Buckle Up to Grow Up program gave more than 1,300 car seats, 6,100 bicycle helmets and 395 life jackets to underserved families throughout the region.
“Kohl’s Cares has been an important partner in our childhood safety community outreach” said Christy Adams, coordinator of the injury and trauma prevention program. “We know that we can reduce childhood injuries in Sacramento by educating families and providing safety equipment. The UC Davis Kohl’s Buckle Up to Grow Up program offers safety education by our expert staff, and our partnership with Kohl’s Cares provides free safety equipment for low-income families.”
Adams said the program’s success is due in large part to its numerous community partnerships, including family resource centers, area school districts and community centers in and throughout the Sacramento area.
