Jerrold Bushberg, M.S., Ph.D.

Clinical/Research Interests
Jerrold Bushberg is an expert with more than 30 years of experience in radiation protection, medical physics and the biological effects and safety of ionizing and nonionizing radiation. He has advised government agencies and institutions nationally and internationally, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Dr. Bushberg is certified by several national professional boards, with specific sub-specialty certification in nuclear medicine physics and radiation protection and currently serves on the American Board of Medical Physics. He is the author of numerous book chapters, including the Merck Manual chapter on management of radiation injury, and has several technology patents in the area of radiological emergency response.
Dr. Bushberg is currently Senior Vice-President and Chairman of the Board of the National Council on Radiation Protection Measurements (NCRP), a congressionally chartered scientific advisory organization. He served as chair of the NCRP Radiation Protection in Medicine advisory committee, as well as the International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety and the International Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Committee on Man and Radiation (COMAR).
He serves as Director of Health Physics Programs for the Davis campus and the Health System and has responsibility for medical postgraduate education in medical physics, radiation protection, and radiation biology at UC Davis School of Medicine. He also serves on the faculty of the interdisciplinary Designated Emphasis in Nuclear Science program on the Davis campus. Dr. Bushberg is coauthor of the textbook “The Essential Physics of Medical Imaging,” 3rd ed., which is used extensively by radiology residency programs throughout the United States.
