M. Eric Gershwin

Clinical/Research Interests

Dr. Gershwin is a world renowned authority in clinical immunology, including allergy and rheumatology. He is a "Master" of the American College of Physicians and also a "Master" of the American College of Rheumatology. He has received numerous international honors, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens for lifetime achievement in clinical immunology. Dr. Gershwin has received the AESKU Prize for lifetime contribution in immunology. Gershwin founded the clinical immunology program at UC Davis in 1975. He has a long track record of clinical research involving autoimmunity, allergy and immunology. Dr. Gershwin has published multiple textbooks which are now translated in 7 languages. Gershwin was the first Jack and Donald Chia Endowed Professor recipient at UC Davis in 1994. Gershwin has worked extensively on behalf of patients with immunological diseases for many nonprofit organizations. He has also been a consultant to the FDA, the FTC, the USDA, NIH and DOD. He has written more than 800 scientific articles and 25 clinical books. Many of his books are in widespread usage in teaching programs throughout the world. Gershwin has been an advisor/consultant for multiple governmental agencies, including Japan, the United Kingdom, Holland, Germany, Italy and Australia. He also holds several patents in immunology. Finally, Dr. Gershwin is considered a world expert on environmental health, including such issues as food safety, mold, allergens, asbestos and environmental hazards.
