Joseph Silva Jr. is an expert in infectious diseases and has clinical interests in the areas of general internal medicine, immune deficiency and antibiotic-associated colitis. He served as chair of Internal Medicine for 14 years. Silva's research interests include using polymerase chain reaction and oligonucleotide probes to identify Clostridium-difficile organisms in stools of patients with antibiotic-associated colitis, a major cause of hospital-acquired diarrhea and morbid colitis.
