Dr. Makker is professor of Pediatric Nephrology. He has board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Nephrology and has authored the textbook Pediatric Nephrology. He is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and a member of a number of professional and scientific societies, including: the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, the American Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, the American Society for Investigative Pathology, the American Association of Immunologists, and the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. He also is listed among American Men and Women of Science, Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century, America's Top Pediatricians, America's Top Physicians and Who's Who in America.
Dr. Makker is an eminent expert in the diagnosis and treatment of glomerulonephritides and nephrotic syndrome, and has vast experience in the management of various other kidney disorders in children, including congenital and inherited diseases, hypertension, metabolic disorders, and end-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation.
Since the late 1970s, the National Institutes of Health continually has funded his investigations of the pathobiology and molecular biology of glomerular diseases, research for which he is internationally known. He is a member of the reviewing panels of the National Institutes of Health and many scientific journals, including the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, Nature Clinical Practice, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology, Hypertension, the Journal of Pediatrics, and the American Journal of Pathology, Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology. He has been involved with the American Society of Nephrology Key Contact Network, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology Committee on National Standards for Dialysis and Transplantation in Children, and the National Kidney Foundation of the Northern California Medical Advisory Board.
