UC Davis osteoporosis specialist recognized for contributions to medicine, science
Nancy E. Lane, professor of internal medicine and holder of the endowed chair of Healthy Aging and Geriatrics at UC Davis School of Medicine, received the Remodeling in Bone (RIB) Award from the International Sun Valley Workshop on Musculoskeletal Biology group on August 5 in Sun Valley, Idaho. She also delivered a lecture on the "Wnt signaling pathway: the bone and joint connection."
The workshop, sponsored by the International Society of Bone and Mineral Research, awards a scientist who has made a significant contribution to the understanding of musculoskeletal biology at the basic science and clinical levels, and who has been a major contributor to training the next generation of scientists. The RIB award recognizes basic understanding of dynamic bone remodeling and basic skeletal physiology. It gets its name because these processes were first observed in the rib.
Lane is one of the nation's leading clinicians and scientists in the field of osteoporosis and bone health. Her groundbreaking translational research has identified active agents in bone that improve bone strength, the genetics of musculoskeletal diseases, and the science and therapy of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
Lane is a consultant reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. She is currently an Elected Councilor for the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research and is the principal investigator of two program project grants from the National Institutes of Health on musculoskeletal diseases. She recently received a grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to develop a hybrid molecule that brings stem cells to the bone surface to form bone for the treatment of osteoporosis.
The society is an international organization that facilitates the generation and dissemination of knowledge of bone and mineral metabolism through communication, community, training and multi-disciplinary meetings throughout the world. It aims to create and nurture a global scientific network dedicated to promoting bone health.
