A day in the life of a psychiatry resident

PGY-1 (Consultation/Liaison Service)

7:45 a.m. Pre-rounds on patients, check in with medical students
8:30 a.m. Morning rounds with consultation/liaison team
9:30 a.m. See new consults/follow-up with current cases
10:30 a.m. Weekly Resident Process Group
12:30 p.m. Resident Organizational Meeting (weekly)
1:00 p.m. Didactics (weekly)
4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Finish up last minute issues, review and sign medcal student notes, teaching rounds for medical students

PGY-1 (Primary Care Clinic)

8:00 a.m. Medical grand rounds at the medical center
9:00 a.m. At the Primary Care Center, see patients with a combination of medical and psychiatric problems under the supervision of dual-board certified (family practice/psychiatry or internal medicine/psychiatry) attendings.
12:00 p.m - 1:00 p.m. Lunch break
1:00 pm. - 2:00 p.m. Didactics/Journal Club
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. See urgent care patients at the primary care clinic

PGY-2 (Sacramento County Mental Health Treatment Center)

7:30 a.m. Pre-rounds with existing patients, survey new admissions 
8:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Rounds with team, including social workers, recreational therapists and nursing staff
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Continue to see patients and attend to clinical duties, including discharges, family meetings, testifying in court and supervising medical students.
12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Weekly continuity clinic at county outpatient site (once per week)
6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Crisis call - (approximately once per week) Evaluate patients in the crisis unit with medical patients.
9:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m. Crisis call - (approximately once per week) Cover crisis unit and inpatient facility from home by pager (may be called in for restraint evaluations).
