Dr. Onate is currently the co-lead physician for the Integrated Behavioral Health Clinic at the Sacramento County Primary Care Center. In his clinical work he supervises psychiatry, combined internal medicine and family medicine/psychiatry and internal medicine residents addressing the coordination of medical care in uninsured and indigent patients with mental illness. He has published several articles and contributed a book chapter in the field of primary care and psychiatry integration. He has spoken nationally on the subject of integration and collaboration in medical and mental health care and has appeared on the PBS medical program “Second Opinion”. He has a strong interest in the collaboration and integration of psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment in primary care, HIV medicine and hepatitis C. He is also involved in medical student education as a co-director of Doctoring I and as a medical student career advisor. He is the faculty advisor for the UC Davis School of Medicine chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
