Psychology
A patient's state of mind affects the extent to which he or she will benefit from rehabilitation and make a satisfactory long-term adjustment to any residual disability. Psychologists evaluate patients' psychological and neuropsychological status and facilitate their adjustment to the rehabilitation process and adaptation of their disability.
Services offered
- Neurospychological evaluation and rehabilitation.
- Individual and group therapy, along with family support and education.
- Pain management/biofeedback
- Peer counseling, provided by individuals who have successfully adjusted to a disability themselves.
- Referral to the State of California, Department of Rehabilitation, to help patients begin the process of re-entry into the work force.
- For children, consultation with school psychologists and other personnel, to facilitate the school re-entry process.
Outpatient physical therapy
Outpatient physical therapy is provided in our new, 5000 square foot clinic. Outpatients with all types of diagnosis including sprains, strains, tendinitis, bursitis, contusions and other orthopedic conditions, as well as spinal cord injuries, strokes, head injuries and other neurological conditions. We have preoperative classes for people preparing for total joint replacement or spinal surgery, and back classes for people with chronic back pain. Aquatic therapy in our 4 foot deep, warm water pool is provided to patients who benefit from the buoyant properties of water. In addition, several Community Pool classes are offered to people who may have difficulty exercising on land.
Social worker
These professionals provide services to ensure that patients and family members know about relevant community resources and to help provide a smooth transition back into the home, community, and work or school setting.
Acute care physical therapy
Acute care physical therapy provides therapy to patients who are hospitalized. All areas of the hospital have access to physical therapy, including: Orthopedics, Trauma, Neurology and Neurosurgery, the Burn Unit, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and the Intensive Care Units. Treatments are usually given at bedside. The treatments provided may include strengthening exercises, range of motion, bed mobility, transfer training, balance and coordination activities and gait (walking) training.
Adult and pediatric rehabilitation
Adult and pediatric rehabilitation provides a multi disciplinary treatment approach to patients following severe injuries such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, amputation and orthopedic injuries, or neuromuscular disorders which result in a loss of function. The team consists of Physicians, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, Social Workers and Orthotists working closely with patients and their family. The overall goal of rehabilitation is to help the patient become as independent and self reliant as possible.
Referral sources
Patients are referred by their UC Davis Medical Center or Community physician.
